Narratives #1

The Indian electronic music sorority has few female voices and far fewer is the presence of new talent, when compared to the overwhelming majority of men, 'bros' and token female artists taking up most of the space, resources and bookings. But the picture is evolving, is changing bit by bit, as new initiatives and empowerment models are taking form, to bring female talent and their voices at par in India. Since it's inception, FEMWAV has consistently allocated space and amplified the music and voices of lesser known and newbie DJs, producers and taste-makers. Outside institutional piety, the ‘imported goddesses’ and given nepotism, which often forms a web of elitism around the issue of music based empowerment in India. FEMWAV's manifesto to amplify female and non-binary content and create empowerment models has resulted in a new audio-video series titled 'Narratives'"We are speaking to dozens of unheard (and aspiring) female producers, DJs, rappers and singers, and archiving their voices, as narratives. The narratives are inclusive, localised, personal and open to new ideas and challenges ..." states tsurbhi, newest member of FEMWAV.

The initial idea to create the series came about as a combined effort between FEMWAV and Synthfarm. The diverse and vibrant bunch of female artists present at Synthfarm 2020 also manifested as the highest number of female participants at the annual residency - including the three participants selected under the Empowerment of Female Talent In Electronic Music.

Talking about synthesis, building synths, electronic music and aspirations. Talking about preconceived notions and new interactions forming new bonds. The experience of making one's own little DIY synth. Introspecting about the current electronic music scenes in India as well as their own perspectives, doubts and challenges as artists within a sphere that is largely male dominated. Edited and mixed with extracts of recorded audio from the Open-Studio at Synthfarm, the entire dialogue forms the first episode of 'Narratives'In continuation, through 2020, new female and non-binary talent will be showcased on ‘Narratives’.
